My Literacy Center Handbook

Effective January 1, 2021

Introduction

At My Literacy Center, our main focus is the student and his/her satisfaction and motivation throughout the learning experience. While getting through the material and progressing through grades is a must; confidence and true understanding of basic and complex concepts is just as important, if not more.

My Literacy Center provides an outlet for various areas-from Elementary Math to Test Prep to Essay Edits. Programs are catered to the student and are guaranteed to lead to proficiency in the area of choice. The success of the student is our success!

Mission Statement

Our mission is for students to gain confidence and independence to complete the given task, activity, subject or grade by taking ownership of their learning through one-on-one interaction and guidance.

Vision Statement

We envision our students reaching their academic goals within 6 months. To ensure our students graduate from our program, we will:

- provide each student with an individualized plan

- communicate progress with specified parties

- follow the Grasp, Apply, Perfect system

We truly believe that individuals have different strengths and when one avenue of learning is not working, it may be time to switch to another modality. In 1983, Dr. Howard Gardner proposed that there were different ways of processing information: musical, logical/mathematical, interpersonal, bodily kinesthetic, intrapersonal, visual/spatial, verbal/linguistic and naturalist.

The table below further explains Dr. Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

Failure to Pay: Reminders to pay your invoice may be sent afte a week of the initial invoice if left unpaid. Failure to pay 3 consecutive invoices may result in an immediate cancellation of sessions until the full amount is paid. Feel free to contact Zainab by text, call or email for questions or concerns about payments.

Charges and Fees

Program hourly charges range from $25 to $30, though additional charges may be applied. Exceptions may apply depending on multiple members of the same household receiving tutoring or financial needs, with provided proof or voucher.

Arriving Late: If the tutor is on time and waiting, the timer is running and he/she must still stick to the expected end time. Tutors are only directed to wait at the session location for 15 minutes after the start time. It is important to stay in contact with the tutor when you are late or canceling sessions. He/she may have already left and you may be charged for the full session. This also applies to online sessions.

Providing a Tip: Each invoice you receive will have an option for you to tip your tutor. This is an optional feature. If you decide to provide a tip, the full amount will be sent directly to the tutor.

Adjustments for Online Sessions: Notify your tutor at least 1 hour ahead of the session if you need to cancel or reschedule. If you are running late, please notify the tutor at least 15 minutes before your session begins, by texting or emailing the tutor. You may be charged the full amount of your session, if the tutor has not heard from you and is waiting up to 15 minutes for you to join the session. If you choose to cancel sessions permanently, you must do so by contacting me, Zainab Abdus-Saboor, by email or text at least 24 hours before your upcoming session. Failure to do so may result in you being charged as a 'No-Show'.

Canceling Sessions

When canceling an upcoming session, allow at least 1 hour prior to the session to notify the respective parties of the cancelation. Only written notifications (emails or texts) are acceptable when canceling sessions. No phone calls. If you wish to cancel an upcoming session for any reason, emergency or non-emergency, you must be sure to do so through written documentation with ample time provided to the tutor.

Contacting Zainab Abdus-Saboor and/or the tutor within 1 hour of the upcoming session may result in being partially or fully charged for the session. Charges may apply when the tutor is in route or waiting at the session location. You will see this charge on your next invoice.

The following table shows examples how you may be charged when canceling sessions if the tutoring session began at 4pm and you were charged $25 an hour.

Canceling Sessions Permanently:

If the parent or student wishes to cancel sessions permanently, an email must be written directly to Zainab Abdus-Saboor at least 24 hours before the upcoming session including: 1) when the last session takes/took place, 2) a brief explanation for why sessions are being cancelled permanently and 3) a brief statement of how sessions were.

The tutor may choose to cancel sessions permanently if there is proof of misconduct or hostility from either the student or the parent/guardian. The tutor may also choose to cancel sessions permanently if he/she feels that he/she cannot help the student reach his/her goal. In both of these situations, the tutor will communicate directly with Zainab Abdus-Saboor at least 24 hours before the upcoming session to explain the reasoning. The parent/guardian will receive an email, call and/or text from Zainab Abdus-Saboor to discuss future options.
